The Society came into existence in 1976 as a branch of the Rawalpindi
Patients Welfare Society. In 1971 it was registered as an independent Society under the name of "Poor Patients Welfare Society". Members are dedicated women of the Capital, both professional and non-professional. A liaison was established with the Government PolyClinic in order to provide medicines to the general public, who were not entitled to the benefits provided to Government employees. The doctors examined the patients, and the Society provided them with the prescribed medication free of cost. The success of this support encouraged the Society to expand its activities to the dwellers of the Katchi Abadis in the surrounding vicinity of Islamabad. A team of volunteers and a doctor visit these areas regularly to examine and provide treatment to the sick. Those who are seriously ill are then referred to Specialists at the hospitals in the
twin cities. Medicines, necessary material help and other advice on family planning and additional socio-economic support are given to the patients. A volunteer lawyer helps the Society in seeking legal advice for women in distress. In November 1994, the Society formally established a Center in Sector G-7/2 of Islamabad.
